Mouth Guards
Do You Grind Your Teeth?
Do you often wake up with a dull headache or sore jaw? Until you experience pain or have a dental check-up, you may not know that you have what’s called “bruxism”. Grinding or clenching your teeth is known as bruxism.
Many people are unaware that they grind their teeth because it usually occurs while they sleep. Some people who grind make sounds as they clench their teeth and others don’t make any noise while bruxing.
Seeing your dentist for an evaluation will help determine if you are a bruxer. If you are, your dentist will notice unusual wear spots on your teeth. People who grind or clench may wake up with a headache, ear ache or toothache. Besides discomfort, grinding could eventually damage dental restorations or loosen teeth. Bruxing can also cause teeth to crack, or as tooth enamel is worn down, the dentin may be exposed which can lead to sensitivity.
Based on your dentist’s diagnosis, treatments may be recommended. A custom-fit mouth guard can be made to wear at night. The night guard keeps your teeth from touching the opposing teeth and will relieve the pressure of grinding or clenching.
