Gum Disease

Why do our adult patients receive a Peridontal Probing yearly?

A periodontal probing is a procedure to diagnose the many stages of periodontal disease, an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults affecting an estimated 75% of adults in the United States. The series of measurements in the probing detect the health of the gums and bones supporting the teeth. In “healthy” dentition, the probing measurements in shallow gingival pockets are 1-3mm deep; gums are tight, pink color and absent of bleeding.

Periodontal disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. These bacteria create toxins that can damage the gums if not properly removed by daily brushing and flossing. In the early stage of periodontal disease, called gingivitis the probing measurements are 3-4mm and gums become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible since bone health isn’t jeopardized and may be eliminated by a dental cleaning (prophylaxis or debridement) followed by good oral hygiene and regular check-ups.

Left untreated, chronic gingivitis can trigger your immune system to “destroy” bone and gum attachment. In this more advanced stage of periodontal disease, called periodontis, the gums and bone that support the teeth can become seriously and permanently damaged. Moderate stage: pockets measure 5-7mm, gums are loose and flabby with moderate bleeding, and bad breath. Advanced stage: pockets 7mm+, severe bleeding gums with pus between tooth and gums, loose teeth along with bad breath that does not go away. Periodontal surgery is necessary to rid the infection and stop the progression of the disease at this stage to prevent possible tooth extraction(s). Our office offers Laser Periodontal Surgery (LANAP) in place of traditional scalpel periodontal surgery.
