A crown (or cap) is a dental restoration, typically made of porcelain, that our dentists may place to restore a damaged, aesthetically imperfect or root canal-treated tooth to an ideal shape and size. Dental crowns are created to match the color of your existing teeth for a natural appearance and usually require two visits to Sonshine Family Dental. When in place, a dental crown will provide strength and protection to your teeth and restore the function and beauty of your smile.
Gold onlays, also known as three-fourths crowns, are placed when a full crown is not needed to restore the decay or damage that has affected the tooth. Dr. Steven Driggers or Dr. Samuel Driggers may recommend a gold onlay instead of a full crown because it is a more conservative treatment and requires less removal of healthy tooth structure.
Your gold dental onlay will be custom designed in a dental lab to match the contours of your natural tooth, providing you with the best results possible for the health, function and appearance of your tooth and smile. Onlays are typically recommended when the damage to your tooth extends to one or more of the cusps of the teeth. For this reason, they are also known as three-fourths crowns or partial crowns. Once placed, onlays work to strengthen the tooth, preserve your natural tooth structure and protect against future damage. We have chosen to use gold material for our onlays because gold is strong and resistant to breaking, and it does not cause damage to the opposing tooth.
Dental bridges use crowns placed over the two teeth adjacent to the gap to anchor an artificial tooth. Bridges are created using tooth-colored materials for a more natural result and, once in place, can improve the function of your bite and the aesthetics of your smile. Dental bridges typically require several appointments to complete.
