Sports, Your Teeth, and a Mouthguard

Posted .

Do you play any sports? Did you know that if you do, you should probably be wearing a mouthguard?

But, if you don’t have a mouthguard, where do you go to get one? You may have seen stock and bite and boil mouthguards at the store. These are definitely affordable options. But, did you know that your dentist can also create a custom mouthguard for you?

As you’ve probably guessed, each of these mouthguards has different attributes. For example, stock mouthguards tend to be too heavy and bulky and can make it difficult to breathe or speak. Boil and bite mouthguards usually fit better because they are softened, then bit into. This means they will at least have a shape similar to your smile. Still, the fit will not be perfect and they are made of lower-quality material than what a dentist can offer.

While you will need to visit a dentist for a custom mouthguard, they are specifically designed to fit your smile. This will make breathing easier and wearing your mouthguard more comfortable. Custom mouthguards will also absorb impact more effectively and prevent damage to your teeth or head. Similarly, because custom mouthguards distribute impact properly, you will be less likely to suffer from fractures and concussions.

It is also important to care for your mouthguard properly, regardless of the type you choose. We recommend replacing your mouthguard when it becomes worn and that you not leave the mouthguard in hot water or in the sun. You should brush your mouthguard before and after you use it with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
